Narrowband Ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) phototherapy is an in-office treatment prescribed by dermatologists. It is used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including psoriasis, eczema, and vitiligo. The machine shines a narrow spectrum of ultraviolet radiation on the skin that acts to decrease inflammation. Treatment involves coming to the clinic 2-3 times per week and standing undressed in the phototherapy booth. Each treatment lasts less than 5 minutes.
Before your first treatment your dermatologist will go through the possible side effects and you will be taught how to use the phototherapy booth. Phototherapy is covered under MSP at no cost to the patient, however you will need to purchase a pair of re-usable goggles to protect your eyes during the treatment. The goggles are sold at our clinic at cost.
The phototherapy booth is located in unit 104.
The cost of a medical dermatology appointment that is booked through a referral from your physician is paid for by MSP. However, MSP doesn’t cover certain treatments for medical conditions that are benign, where treatment is considered optional or cosmetic. Your dermatologist will tell you if any treatment they discuss with you is not covered by MSP.
